Justyn Warner – When Athletes Blog their Secrets

Posted: 08 Dec 2009 12:00 PM PST

It's common to see athletes become coaches once they retire (i.e. Jon Drummond, Leroy Burrell, and Jimson Lee, just to name a few) but we don't see current athletes Blog about their "secrets".

Sure, we've seen the IAAF diaries of elite athletes, but it's mostly about what their dog had for breakfast and complaining about their jetlag.

Justyn Warner is a full time professional track athlete, as well as a part time speed and strength coach.

He is the IAAF World Junior Silver medalist in the 100 meters (10.39 in 2006 at Beijing) and currently holds the Canadian Junior record.   In that race, he was leading at 50-metres (see video below) when his left leg cramped up and had to settle for second.

Yohan Blake of Jamaica, whose personal best today is 9.93 seconds, finished third in that race in 10.42.  Amazing progression!

In 2008, Warner's 10.23 ranked tied for 5th in Canada in the open division.

His Blog is called Coverground.ca and talks about 3 Ways to Improve Your Running Biomechanics:

Everybody runs differently. There's no "perfect" running form out there since we all have different lengths in our limbs, different muscle sizes, different fiber sizes, different weight…no athlete will run the same.

There are though 3 consistent traits of a good runner, and 3 ways you can improve your running biomechanics:

  1. Increase the knee flexion during the swing phase.
  2. Push forward through the hips.
  3. Maintain flexibility in both the quadriceps & hip flexors.

Here is the YouTube video (poor quality) of his silver medal at the 2006 World Juniors: (Warner is in Lane 7)
