About Today: How to Be Good to Yourself in 2010

OK, I've found it: It's our New Year's Resolution for 2010. The only one, in fact, that we need. This year, instead of fixating on losing weight, quitting our bad habits, and paying off our debt, let's just agree to be nicer to ourselves. If we can do that, the other stuff will be easy.

Top 10 Resolutions for a More Positive New Year
This is my favorite: Do something for you everyday. I have a lot of friends who became parents this year. This is particularly appropriate for them. I'm thinking especially of my friend who bragged to me about getting a whole five hours of sleep.

What Are Your Resolutions?
A lot of people are resolving to get up earlier this year. I would do the same, but I hate to start off a new year by lying to myself.

How to Create Good Habits
We tend to think of our bad habits as moral failings, but in fact, they're just things we've trained ourselves to do. Want to be nicer to yourself in the new year? This is how to make it stick.

2009 Photo of the Year – Angela Morosanu

Posted: 31 Dec 2009 12:02 AM PST

My favourite pictures of 2009 came from the IAAF Super Grand Prix Athletissima meeting on July 7, 2009 at the Olympic stadium in Lausanne.

No, it wasn't the photo of Usain Bolt in the pouring rain.

In the picture below, Angela Morosanu, whose sponsor is Adidas, falls during the women’s hurdles 400 meters.  This photo was not altered by Photoshop.  (Photo courtesy of http://gettyimages.com/)

From the telephoto lens angle, it appears she was trounced by the (big, bad?) NIKE swoosh..  Sort of like the attack of the Killer Tomatoes.

The 400 meter hurdles can be such a cruel event.

This picture (left) shows her stumbling after hitting the nth hurdle.

For a great collection of High Resolution Track photos, check out Boston.com Sports Blog July 2009 issue.  The "Usain in the Rain" is photo #18.

Happy New Year to everyone!

Bring on 2010.

Commonwealth Games anyone?  Or Diamond League?

Special 50th Anniversary – The 400 Blows

Posted: 30 Dec 2009 12:22 PM PST

This movie has nothing to do with Track & Field or the 400 meters, but I like the title of the movie.

Being bilingual trilingual in English, French and Italian makes me appreciate foreign films.

I love the English Title for the French Film Les Quatre Cents Coups (1959) or The 400 Blows. Of course I'm a little biased…

This is the special 50th anniversary of that film.  If you haven't seen it, check your local library, Blockbuster or Netflix.

Open any magazine or click on any website this month, and you'll find at least one wrap-up piece on the last decade. The theme of this piece? WORST DECADE EVER. Without further ado, I bring you some things that happened in the 2000s that were anything but grim. (It's getting better all the time!)

Medical Breakthroughs
A random sampling: the world's first face transplant, a tooth generated from stem cells, and nanomedicine.

A Decade of Women CEOs
In 2000, only 3 women ran FORTUNE 500 companies. Those of you who like the maths figured out right away that this means 497 men ran FORTUNE 500 companies, which is, um, slightly uneven. But! Things got better in the aughties.

The Psychic Internet
Want to know what your fellow people are thinking? Look at the top 25 searches of the decade. It's like the internets can read my mind! (My mind, by the way, has apparently spent the last ten years thinking about NASCAR and the iPhone.)
