This weekend, I looked around my house and realized that it's entirely suitable for use as shelter by the Joads. I'm not quite sure how everything got so shabby, except to say that I have a tendency to hold onto things. (I wrote this sitting at a child's desk. It didn't used to bump my knees.)

However, spring has sprung and all of that, so I'm thinking of freshening the place up a bit. The trouble is, of course, that I seem to have misplaced my designer budget.

Spring Makeover Using Reclaimed Objects
Usually, when people talk about reclaimed objects, I have a mental picture of them with a banana peel hanging off their head, rooting around in Dumpster. This might be a great way to find new furnishings, etc., but it's definitely not for me. Fortunately, dumpster diving isn't your only option.

Trash to Treasure Flea Market Makeovers
A friend of mine made over his entire house using stuff he found at flea markets, but you'd never know it. A little paint and polish, and most of his finds look better than new. They're certainly cheaper than new.
