The FIFA World Cup, also called the Football (Soccer) World Cup, or just the World Cup is being held in South Africa, between 11 June and 11 July 2010.

Up until 1978, only 16 teams qualified.  In 1982, that increased to 24 teams, and finally 32 teams in 1998.

There are 8 groups of 4 teams.  Each group plays a round-robin tournament, guaranteeing every team will play at least three matches.  The top two teams from each group advance to the knockout stage or elimination games.  The other two teams go home.

Points are used to rank the teams within a group. Since 1994, three points have been awarded for a win, one for a draw and none for a loss.

If two or more teams end up with the same number of points, tiebreakers are used:

  1. first is goal difference
  2. then total goals scored
  3. then head-to-head results
