We have a long weekend coming up here in the States, and that means one thing: barbecue. Because I don't want to spend my holiday in the ER, I'll probably let my fiance do most of the cooking this weekend.

What Causes Food Poisoning?
My cooking. OK, I'll stop. In all seriousness, there are several ways to compromise the safety of your Memorial Day feast. These are the bacteria you're trying to avoid, and the symptoms they'll provoke if they make it into your dinner.

As my sister once pointed out, it can be hard to tell when your child has food poisoning. "Your nephew throws up as a hobby," she said. I notice he generally becomes "my nephew" when he does his impression of a sea cucumber.

Certain people (pregnant women, for example) should call a doctor immediately if they think they have food poisoning. The rest of us need to look out for specific symptoms in order to know whether it's time to call a professional.
