The other day, just for fun, I decided to take a look in my fridge and determine how far my food had to travel before it got to me.

The good news: Eggs and milk from about twenty miles away, and cereal and bread from the continental United States. The bad news? Uh, I'm going to need a lot of frequent flyer miles if I want to visit the birth place of either my grapes or bottled water.

I then realized that I have no idea what's even in season right now. Eggplant? Lingonberries? Knishes? (Those grow on trees, right? And if so, how do I go about getting a knish tree for my very own?)

Here's my favorite reason to eat locally: the food tastes better. I find it so much easier to be good when being good is also delicious.

The farmer's market will be opening soon in my neighborhood, and this year, I need a strategy. (Last year, I bought food according to the "Ooh! Pretty!" plan and wound up with a lot of leftover greens moldering in the crisper.)
