Maurice Wilson: Sprinting the Jamaican Way: Relay Technique, Drills & Strategies (DVD)

This is part 3 of a 3 part series in reviewing Maurice Wilson's 3 DVD set on Jamaican sprinting.  Part 1 can be found herePart 2 can be found here.

Maurice Wilson's resume is impressive:

  1. Jamaican National Track & Field Team Assistant Coach (Sprints) at the 2008 and 2004 Olympic Games and in four World Championships;
  2. Head Coach to the 2002 and 2001 Jamaican World Junior Teams;
  3. Head Girls Track Coach at Holmwood Technical High School in Manchester (JA) where his squads have taken seven consecutive girls National Championships

Topics discussed in this DVD include:

  1. planning, both in the high level annual plan (mesocycle) and down to the weekly microcycle
  2. tactics, runner placement strategy, and selection criteria by the leg
  3. importance of team building and chemistry
  4. hand positioning, both for the lead off leg and the 3 baton exchanges
  5. for the 4×100m relay and 4×200m relay, baton exchange drills to train the proper mechanics of the push pass before, during and after the exchange
  6. visual exchange for the 4×400m
  7. how to add chaos to the exchange drills to better prepare your team for competition
  8. BONUS: Coach Wilson analyzes four different 4×100 national competition relays, breaking down each leg of each relay to show the challenges of perfecting the push pass

This video is 34 minutes long and produced in 2010

Relays are the most exciting component to Track and Field, primarily because it turns the individual events into a team event.  The team score is often decided by the final event of the competition:  the 4×400m relay.
