Learning with Tom Tellez and Dan Pfaff

Posted: 19 Jan 2011 01:00 AM PST

If you had the chance to see Tom Tellez or Dan Pfaff in person last November in Toronto or London, then you know who I am talking about.

If you are a Track and Field coach, I really don't need to go into detail of these two coaches.

I've been attending seminars over the past 2 decades and the take message home message has always been, "How can I apply their teachings to my program?".  I never suggest you copy and paste another coaches' program as every case must be tailored individually.

Both Tom Tellez and Dan Pfaff presented a seminar that is now available to the public. You may remember my experience with USATF seminars where I was not allowed to show the videos on my website!

Thanks to Kebba Tolbert (coach at Syracuse, Portland State, and now at UTEP), these videos are now available!

What's in the videos?

In the videos, Tom Tellez presents the Sprints, Hurdles and Shot Put. Dan Pfaff presents Sprints, Hurdles and Jumps. There is an hour long roundtable Q&A period at the end with both coaches, followed by a detailed "Field Event Technique Fixes" by Dan Pfaff.

You'll have to ignore the long winded sales page, but you'll definitely learn something from the content of the videos.

The entire 7.5 hour "Learning from the Legends" Seminar from Coach Tom Tellez and Dan Pfaff is normally $99, but on sale for only $77 until Friday January 21st at midnight. Videos, PowerPoint slides, and all the lecture notes are included.

There is a 60 Day, No Risk, No Questions Asked, 100% Money Back Guarantee if the content is not right for you.

2011 Pacific Association Legacy Coach Award

Posted: 18 Jan 2011 06:00 PM PST

The PAUSATF Coaches Committee recognizes many influential coaches who have served in the association who have selflessly strengthened their sport through teaching, mentoring, and promoting their profession.

Long time Humboldt State coach Jim Hunt was the inaugural award recipient in 2010.

Criterion will be weighted heavily on coaches who were not only great coaches, but who also inspired and trained/mentored many of us to become coaches ourselves…hence the idea of a Legacy Coach Award.

  1. Coaches submitted for consideration should have mentored former athletes become successful coaches in their own right
  2. Mentored former athletes
  3. Having coached for a period of time in the Pacific Association
  4. Exhibited qualities of ethical coaching
  5. Contributed to several aspects of the association, while promoting the sports of USATF
  6. Candidates could come from any level of coaching

The 2011 Pacific Association Legacy Coach Award winner is:

<insert drum roll here>

… Bud Winter …

I'll be featuring a multi series post on his biography.

USTFCCCA Track & Field Technical Certification, February 4-5, 2011

Posted: 18 Jan 2011 12:00 PM PST

I am a firm believer where you can never stop learning.

I've promoted (and attended) several Track and Field conferences such as the latest offerings from the USATF, CACC, and UKA.  As well, I also recommend books and DVDs from Amazon and Affiliates.

USTFCCCA Track & Field Academy in another great resource for coaches to enhance their knowledge which includes both Track & Field and Cross Country.

Some of their coaches and presenters include Gary Winckler for Sprints, Hurdles and Relays;  Boo Schexnayder, for the jumping events; and Mike Young from Elite Track and HPC Sport for Sport Sciences.

With the USTFCCCA, you can take a course for a certification, or you can take an individual course for a specialized event.  Currently, the USTFCCCA represents over 8,000 coaches working in the NCAA, NAIA, and high schools nationwide.  It serves as an advocate and lobbyist for coaches and their interests, and provides a leadership structure to assist the needs of a diverse membership.

Track & Field Technical Certification, February 4-5, 2011

The Track & Field Technical Certification (TFTC) is a 2 day, 15 hour course in the coaching of Track & Field. Certification by the USTFCCCA is granted for successfully completing the course and evaluation. The curriculum covers all key aspects of technical coaching.
