Tyson Gay’s Manchester 150m Post Race Analysis

Posted: 16 May 2011 12:08 PM PDT

Let's put his 14.51 in perspective.

Last year, Tyson Gay was in better shape and runs 0.06 seconds outside of Bolt’s world record best for 150m en route to his 200m WR of 19.41.  From 50-150m, both Gay and Bolt split 8.72

This year, Gay says he’s not going after the record, he missed training due to injury, the conditions were wet and awful, and he still runs 0.16 outside the world record best.  He split 9.91 for 100m, just 0.01 slower than Bolt's splits in 2009.  The biggest slowdown was the last 50m segment (4.60 vs 4.45)

In any case, the real winners were the fans who braved the weather to see some good head to head competition… something that is missing in today's World Record chasing with glorified time trials in middle and long distance races.

The video can be found on BBC Sports.
