400 meters: Forget Usain Bolt, Here is Jermaine Gonzales

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 08:00 AM PDT

What do you get when you have Usain Bolt as a teammate, Glen Mills as the head coach with former 400 meter Olympian Bert Cameron as a coach?  Coupled that with being a taller than average height for a sprinter (1.90m or 6 foot 3 inches)?

Ecco Jermaine Gonzales…

Jermaine Gonzales ran 44.63 last Friday at the Paris Diamond League and with Jeremy Wariner absent, he had the preferential lane 5 with fellow Jamaican Ricardo Chambers in lane 6 in front of him.

This is how you run the 400 meters,  Hard and fast and relaxed for the first 200m, especially from 100m to 200m.

At the Monaco Diamond League, they ran 44.40 and 44.53 respectively.  It's unusual seeing the top 4 spots occupied by Caribbean countries and not the traditional USA.

Even if they tied up and lost in the final 100 meters, I still would have the utmost respect for these guys as I love the execution of the race.  You have to get out hard for the first 200 meters and you really have to work harder on the 3rd 100 meter segment on the curve.
