From Jen Hubley, your About Today Editor
Look at the calendar, and you might think it's a little late in the year for this newsletter. If so, I congratulate you: You are obviously not one of the 20 people who've messaged me lately (via IM, email, or passenger pigeon) to say that they are freezing.

Eat Something Warm: Recipes to Warm You Up
Why are we so cold, when the mercury is on the way up? I think it's because we (or our landlords) have mostly shut off the heat. After all, it's almost March! Nearly spring! We should be warm by now.

Drink Something Warm: Drinks for Cold Days
But since we're not, I guess it's time to make treats, both food- and beverage-related, to warm us up from the inside out.

Stop Drafts: How to Make a Door Draft Stopper
If you can't bear to turn up the heat, sometimes you can just stop the drafts.

Kirani James 44.80 indoor 400 meters Video

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 12:20 AM PST

Kirani James of Grenada, currently a sophomore at the University of Alabama, won the SEC Championships Men's 400 meters in a time of 44.80, just missing the 44.57 World Record set by Kerron Clement in 2005.

Just a couple of things to point out before we get to the video.

First, note the block setup on the curve, whether it's banked or not.  You want a best straight imaginary line that runs along the tangent of the curve.  This way, the first few steps out of the blocks is a straight line before you negotiate the curve.  I like the way Kirani James sets his blocks up, as this is how I coach my athletes.

Second, although technically it's illegal to have your hands touching outside the line, most officials allow it because the indoor tracks are not the full width as an outdoor track.  As long as the hands are behind the (imaginary) starting line, and touching it, the officials will let it go.

Note the White line is for the 200 meters, and the Blue line is for 400m to allow for the extra distance to break for the pole after 2 turns.

OK, the only one I was jealous of was Anne Hathaway who -- as a host -- wore so many gorgeous dresses it made my head spin. Lucky girl!
