From Jen Hubley, Your About Today Editor.
At this time every year, I make plans for my Super Bowl Sunday ... and then realize that I have no idea what will be happening on my TV screen. (Seriously. I forgot it was football season until about a month ago. Judge me if you must.)

The Basics of Football
I once asked my friend Isaac if there were any actual rules to football, or if people just randomly decided to jump on top of each other in the middle of the field. His scorn was visible from space.

A Glossary of Football Terms
Some of these terms just sound like sports drinks: red dog, redshirt, red zone. That's a lot of red.

About the Indianapolis Colts
I have family in Indianapolis. The last time they were this excited about a sporting event, a racetrack was involved.

About the New Orleans Saints
I love Saints fans. I IMed my friend Bonnie the other day and said "Who dat?" and she freaked out.

Mike Holloway – 25 Tips & Drills for the Sprint Events (DVD)

Mike Holloway: 25 Tips & Drills for the Sprint Events (DVD)

Mike Holloway, the University of Florida Head Track & Field, is recognized as one of the top sprint coaches in the sport.  Coach Holloway believes that the make-up of a successful sprinter must include the ingredients of power, flexibility, elasticity and the willingness to be a student of the event.

Holloway strives to adapt those ideas to the training and competitive arena:

  • Drills are done for endurance and to teach the body to do things in a proper way.
  • The ground strike of the foot is the focus of these sprint drills.
  • The dribble series involves five footwork drills in the warm-up mode.
  • The start is a vital component that sets of the rhythm and flow of the sprint.

Holloway uses an athlete to demonstrate the proper starting position and includes the common errors made when starting.

The Race Model for the 100 m sprint is broken down into three areas:

  • drive from the blocks
  • acceleration phase
  • maintenance phase

Patience is the key to the drive phase, pushing to 30 m.

For the 200 m race, Holloway teaches the sprinter how to attack the curve and reinforces the principles of running the straightaway.

The 400 m sprint is broken down into five phases. Acceleration is the key to the first 30. Being aggressive – yet in control – is a key to the middle phases of this race. In the last phase, sprinters are taught to be calm and focus on the proper sprint movements.

Race footage shows the breakdown of each of the fundamentals of 100m, 200m and 400m sprints.

This video is 32 minutes long.

About Today: Will the iPad Be a Success?

About.com

From Jen Hubley, Your About Today Editor.
If our Twitter account is anything to go by, more people were talking about the debut of the iPad than the State of the Union address. This either means that people really like gadgets or that we're all sick of news.

Meet the iPad
The iPad looks like a giant iPhone, acts like a cross between a netbook and a Kindle, and can fit into a purse. (Well. Can fit into my purse.)

What Does it Cost?
I was honestly expecting it to cost about a million dollars, which makes the actual price tag of (as low as) $499 seem pretty reasonable in comparison. It all depends on the model you want and the data plan you choose. Here's what to expect.

Will the iPad Be a Success?
Quote from a coworker: "OK, so I was wrong about the iPod, but this is going to fail too." I'm torn, personally. It seems to me to be a lot like a netbook with a stand, but I also have friends who could buy a single, beat-up, old shoe if it had the Apple logo on it, so who knows.

What the iPad Doesn't Have
Facial recognition, for one thing. I'm sort of glad. An Apple tablet with facial recognition would definitely take over Cyberdyne systems at some point, and then, the world.
